Purchase options and add-ons
“Tara Dublin has that rarest of skills: she knows how to tell a story with startlingly funny and soulful elegance. Get lost in her world, and her wonderful writing voice. You won’t want to leave that world, and you shouldn’t.” –Cameron Crowe, Oscar-winning director and screenwriter
Welcome to your all-access backstage pass to the hottest rock and roll love story inspired by the ultimate meet-cool, because the fanfiction genre has never had a more uniquely awesome origin story!
Take the wild world of Almost Famous, throw in the romantic intensity of Daisy Jones and the Six with just a touch of The Way We Were, and then give it a Warped Tour soundtrack.
As Death Cab for Cutie so famously sang, this isThe Sound of Settling:
It’s 2006, and Lila Ericson Donovan has been married to one of the world’s biggest rock stars for five years: Grady Donovan, lead singer of the Grammy-winning band Case Closed. Grady plucked Lila from the front row of one of his concerts in 2001 and swept her away into a life she thought she wanted. The Sound of Settling tells the love story between Lila and Grady in a character study that unfolds across five years and countless tour stops. Starting with their unexpected meet-cool, Lila is quickly given a seemingly perfect life on the road.
Red carpets, limos, private jets, hanging out with the upper echelon of rock royalty...it’s the American dream, isn’t it? She’s with the band!
But for those who actually live it, it isn’t always like the glossy photos in Rolling Stone. The rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle is a hard one even for those deeply in love, and outside obligations and distractions can impact even the most solid of marriages.
So when life on the road comes to a screeching halt at the kind of tour stop Lila could never have expected, will she stay or will she go?

About the author
Tara Dublin is a self-described "untapped goldmine" of material. Now scraping out a living as a (currently unemployed) freelance writer, Tara has written for Occupy Democrats, HillReporter.com, DAMEMagazine.com, National Lampoon, the Huff Post, Jewcy.com, The Oregonian, and Oregon Music News. It’s hard to describe what an accomplishment this novel is. As a former DJ on Portland radio KNRK, Dublin uses her vast insight into the music industry to beautifully depict a very credible behind-the-scenes lifestyle of the rich and famous. Set in the historical backdrop of the best of rock music icons, Dublin weaves an epic, heart-wrenching, and captivating story of true love, lost innocence, and survival.
Ms. Dublin also has a powerful and unique marketing approach, positioning the book to be picked up by Hollywood and made into a movie. It certainly would strike a chord with a large audience, having a great title, and doozy of a cliffhanger ending.
I hope The Sound of Settling makes it all the way to the big screen and that Ms. Dublin doesn’t settle for just one, but also writes a sequel!
This story is a great metaphor for the average woman in society. We get married and we start to lose our sense of self because we are so busy taking care of those around us. This book allows us to explore those sacrifices with such a heavy hand because of how extreme Lyla's circumstances are. She feels like every time she doesn't play ball, she risks huge consequences for everyone around her, and everyone around her includes a whole band and everyone that band employs which is a huge ricochet. She is aware of the way women are treated in the industry and feels the pressure to always be on so she is likable. Every woman has felt that pressure to do what is easiest, just give in, and let the needs of everyone around you be more important than the needs of yourself. Who is going to make dinner if you take a night class? Who will clean the house if you work? Who will be hurt by you choosing yourself? This book was a beautiful, heartbreaking, thinkpiece.
Highlights:
-Set in about 2006 riddled with musical nostalgia for those of us who spent our youth at the warped tour.
- Written in a unique cadence reminiscent of a VH1 Behind The Music episode.
- We got stories about the whole band, not just Lyla and Grady
-The author is clearly knowledgeable about music. Some of the conversations between Lyla and Grady are conversations I have had with musicians.
